The image on the display of my MacBook Pro A is very dim.

Adjust the brightness on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

I'm not sure but I don't think that it's the backlight since the image is visible enough that the laptop can still be used but the screen lighting is very dim. The brightness adjustment on the F1 and F2 keys do nothing when either one of them is held down. The brightness adjustment in the System Preferences doesn't do a thing to dim or brighten the screen image. Is this a common problem and is there a fix for this problem.

Don, sounds like either a bad inverter or a bad backlight. What are the last three of your serial number? This will identify your computer a bit better and might help to further trouble shoot. The complete serial number is WX31AQ.

In an effort to try to diagnose the problem myself I took the display off my daughter's old A that had died some time ago and put it on this one and the problem is still there. My daughter's laptop was working perfect until it stopped turning on so if the problem I'm experiencing is in the display I think that it should have fixed the problem, but it didn't.

Nothing that I have done seems to make the light adjustment better or worse. When I hold F2 down the light image is displayed on the screen and the bar below it indicates that the light is being increased but the display light doesn't change at all. When I hold down F1 the bar indicates that the light is being decreased but it doesn't change a thing on the display screen either of the screens that I have tried out. Don, first I must admit that I am not a Mac person. So this answer is a general answer and hopefully the Mac Guru's can help you out further.

Since you already replaced the LCD with a working one, it is possible that this is caused by a bad inverter. Try to connect an external display and see if that works. If it does not, then you are having GPU trouble on your computer. Apple suggest:" No display or dim display, but computer appears to operate correctly and has video operating on external display display is fine after startup, but after a few seconds no display or dim display.

Reboot the computer—hold down the Control and Command keys and press the Power button, or press and hold the Power button for 5 to 10 seconds to shut down the computer, then press the Power button to restart. Reset the SMC. Reset PRAM. Restart the computer, then hold down the Option-Command-P-R keys until you hear the startup sound at least one additional time after the initial startup sound. Verify battery connector with sleep switch connection. Check cables around the hinges for damage.

If the numbers are right, then you have a fuse for your backlight on your logic board. Test it with a multimeter and see if you have continuity. So I just bought this macbook 2 weeks ago newest macbook pro 13 inch and every once in a while there will be a flicker across the screen in the middle and it will be gone in a flash. I did this about a week ago and haven't experienced the flickering ever since.

Even if this takes care of the problem for you, though, I would suggest contacting Apple about it. It's really important that they look into it and fix it in a future software update if it is indeed a software problem, which I'm guessing it is. Besides, not being able to use True Tone and auto-brightness on a brand new machine is quite unacceptable.

I've been having this issue on my brand new Macbook Pro 13 inch. Took it to Apple store and had it sent in for repair and they gave it back a week later saying that they were unable to replicate the issue.

Really hoping that this issue is resolved with the release of Mac OS Catalina. It doesn't seem likely that this many devices are physically defective. If you have any power to raise this to people with more authority, it would help a lot of Apple customers who have spent a pretty penny to have these "premium" machines.

I have managed to catch it on video and was able to pause the video to capture the actual image that flashes across the screen. The image below is from the first one I bought. It first flashed very sporadically within the first week and then gradually got more frequent or I started to notice it more and stopped thinking it was just me blinking about three weeks in.

I returned and replaced the computer with another brand new one and the same timeline. It started about a week or so after I purchased, and gradually got more frequent. There is no consistency to the timing of it.

Sometimes it will happen multiple times in a few minutes, other times it will go hours without doing it. I work almost exclusively in Chrome, but I am almost positive it has happened while using other apps as well.

Enable Adaptive Brightness is already Off. Turn off display after Both my wife and I have Apple CinemaDisplays and they both have recently begun to dim and brighten on their own. This doesn't occur until after logging into Windows At some point—after logging in—the monitors begin to dim and brighten on their own.

When the physical brightness controls buttons for the monitors are used, there is something happening that fights the use of these buttons i. Eventually the monitor returns to it's darkest state on its own, then it will sometimes begin to brighten again. This issue does not occur when hooked up to our Macs, or when we were on Win7.

It began with a recent Win10 update. I have attempted to give the Nvidia Control Panel full control of the monitor, and though it can adjust the settings, it doesn't lock out whatever is causing this randomness. Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. This started happening after updating my intel driver so it is the latest. So I'm starting to think whatever causes this gets reset whenever a driver is updated.

This was not happening until yesterday when I updated my bios and a bunch of drivers. I had a windows 10 system at work last year that was constantly dimming the display, even though all dimming settings on the monitor and system were disabled. It dims while not using a bright program, as soon as I bring a bright program to the foreground like this browser the screen brightens. I would think this would be the opposite of desired behavior, that is when a white window comes forward you suddenly get blinded by the increased brightness.

There was a setting about setting brightness adaptively based on background image; I think that fixed my work computer If you can't astound 'em with brilliance I had a similar problem which turned out to be related to a Scheduled Task that is active by default.

Confusingly, it also outperforms some HDR displays costing considerably more, by some metrics. When I watched the announcement of this display, I was curious how Apple would handle an HDR video monitor that was also tasked with the mundane duty of displaying your email and a web browser.

The photo, of course, cannot capture how startling this is in person. Apple is commoditizing and normalizing HDR on their most popular platform, both in capture and display.

The OLED displays drive each pixel to the desired brightness individually. And even as they tout EDR as a selling point of their professional display and flagship iPhones, Apple has also quietly extended it to older Macs that were never advertised as being HDR-capable. Some Macs can process pixel data with a wider range of pixel values and send those extended values to the display.

In macOS, the ability to process larger pixel values and display them is referred to as extended dynamic range EDR. When you configure a Metal layer to support extended values, you can provide pixel values — and therefore brightness levels — that exceed the normal SDR range in order to display HDR content. I think the limiting factors may be P3-gamut displays on Macs running Catalina or later.

If you have such a Mac, you can try this at home. Think of it this way: This EDR display philosophy is so important to Apple that they are willing to spend battery life on it. Apple has your laptop doing this all the time, on the off chance that some HDR pixels come along to occupy that headroom or not: see update below.

It also means that when you adjust your display brightness, macOS is commensurately adjusting the amount of headroom available for overbrights. HDR standards like Dolby Vision were designed to accommodate screens of varying maximum brightness. The content is display independent, and when macOS goes to render it, it first asks the display how bright it can go, and then builds a bespoke lookup for that output brightness, correctly displaying the content within the available range.
